BBC RADIO 4 COSTING THE EARTH - FIELDS PAVED WITH GOLD

BBC RADIO 4 COSTING THE EARTH RADIOSHOW

An interesting half an hour show where many issues of solar are discussed. The subject of main focus is that of feed in tariffs. Feed in tariffs that are in place as incentives for people to invest and install solar panels. Without FIT in place using solar on a commercial level would not be possible. Without commercial interest in the solar industry it would struggle to grow as much as it needs to for us to be really cutting down on our carbon footprint.
There is criticism of the way the current FIT system is managed and more notably the plans to slash tariffs.
It is said that solar energy has the fastest dropping costs of any generation technology in the world. And that it will be competitive with gas generation within 5 years. The main factor for achieving this exceptional cost reduction is that there is a secure and steady framework for the industry to make the investments, to drive a volume to keep the costs down.
I feel that FIT's are a hugely important factor in the growth of solar energy across the UK and that if we are to see widespread use of solar panels like that of Germany then FIT's need to be managed well.
